    Conflicted

I am just so conflicted. I know meeting with my new therapist here in like a week will help but I was hoping I could maybe get some 'help' before then. Just wondering if anyone else felt like I do and where they are now.

I identity more as a guy. It just feels natural and better to me. I feel most comfortable dressed like a guy and I like it when I am mistaken for one. However, I feel like I am betraying someone if I get rid of all of my femininity. I hate dressing in revealing clothing but got use to it because I thought that is what my husband wanted. I will admit he looks at me differently when I do and I like that look but the discomfort I feel in those clothes is just so great, especially now that I am being honest with myself. So, anyways, kinda to my point, I have wanted a breast reduction since they kept growing (2 kids does that to ya). But now I am wondering should I just reduce them or get rid of them since the cost is about the same for both. But I feel bad if I completely get rid of them because I feel like I can't be feminine for my husband then yet I know he doesn't want me doing that.

Anyone else have this kind of internal conflict happen? What did you decide?

    Bird is the Word
Poor Big Bird. He's a beloved childhood icon, he's turning 40 next week, and he gets no respect in the baking world.

It's one thing to rip the poor guy's beak off, but then to sign your name (illegibly) in its place? For shame, Halko! Or maybe Nillo...Mouo? Dang, this Wreckerator must have written code for the NSA in a former life; I have no idea what that says.

Guys, it's a sad, sad day on Cake Wrecks when a dreaded CCC is the "best" of the bunch:

Although I don't recall his beak being quite that...Popsicle-y. Hang on, lemme go grab a reference photo. [furious clickety-clicking]

    Ah, here we go:

Yeah, not so much a Popsicle as a banana bicycle seat. (Anyone remember those?)

Um...is this Big Bird, or a blonde Elmo? I'm confused.

From the look of that beak/mouth combo, though, at least I know I'm not the only one.

And lastly, if you've ever wondered what would happen if Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird had a lovechild...

    Wonder no more.

Hey Monique R., Donald L., & Todd T., did you know that Big Bird is a lark? It's true. Honest.

    Friday 5: Treats
    1. What treats do you feed your parrot?

    2. How often do you feed treats? (i.e. How many treats per day? Per week?)

    3. How do you deliver your treats? (e.g. Put in food bowl, feed by hand, use during training)

    4. Are there any treats that you were surprised that your parrot liked? Didn't like?

    5. Are there any treats that you consider inappropriate for your parrot? Which ones, and why?

How would you define trans liberation, and a trans liberationist politic?
is it roughly a synonym for anti-cissexist?
I'm especially interested in any blogs or references that don't cite feinberg or koyama (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=w4y&q=%22trans-liberation%22&aq=f&oq=&aqi=)

one of the reasons I am asking is I've been using "trans liberationist" a lot lately--somehow it crept into my vocabulary and I'm just wondering if I'm using it in a coherent way.

Boss hates me, does he know I'm trans?
Hey guys. I've got a sorta tricky situation at work and I have no idea what to do.  My boss at work hates me and I think it might be because he knows I'm trans.

    This Is It.

    2876-0001

“It” didn’t sell at last month’s auction, so maybe you still wanna try and pick “it” up: Artist Michael Whelan’s original acrylic painting, above, for the Jacksons’ famed 1984 work, Victory.

jacksons-victoryThe only album that the six Jackson brothers ever recorded as one group, Victory’s well-known art, right, depicts the siblings posed on an empty desert road that, as it recedes into the distance, rises and disappears into a luminous spiral galaxy filling the night sky. As the auction catalog notes say,

Michael Jackson chose Michael Whelan to paint the cover of the The Jacksons’ album, Victory, after seeing his painting for the cover of Isaac Asimov’s book, Foundation’s Edge. The galaxy in that image was what drew Jackson to Whelan’s work and he wanted a similar effect for the album painting. Whelan was given very specific instructions regarding the poses and positioning of the Jackson brothers as they would appear in the scene. At Michael Jackson’s request, Whelan positioned Michael behind his brothers but made his trademark glowing glove and socks shine forth. Accomplished in acrylic on watercolor board, it measures 20 ½ x 38 in. Except for occasional showings, the work hung in Whelan’s studio since its creation. Includes a LOA [letter of authenticity] from Michael Whelan.

As a local paper noted upon Michael Jackson’s June 2009 death, the Danbury CT painter had profound recollections of going to L.A. to show the family the work-in-progress. Arriving at the airport,

there was a limo waiting to whisk them to the recording studio to meet the Jacksons.

a-jackson-victory-tour1What the Whelans remember about the studio was just how huge the Jackson empire entourage was. Each of the brothers had a lawyer present. Epic Records had a lawyer on hand. Columbia Records, Epic’s parent company, had its own lawyer there.

In this sea of expensive hangers-on, they remembered Jackson as being terrific.

“He treated us warmly and generously and without a bit of phoniness,” Michael Whelan said.  “He talked to Alexa about her Cabbage Patch doll,” Audrey Whelan said. “We were all vegetarians, and I remember talking about how hard it is to go to some banquet and get a huge slab of prime rib on your plate.”

The Whelans spent about 10 days in Los Angeles — long enough for Michael Whelan to capture the look of the Jackson brothers’ faces before returning to Connecticut to finish his work.

Whelan still has the art director’s notes about the cover — mostly about the clothing the six brothers should be wearing. They ended up performing in outfits modeled on those in the painting.

The Whelans said Tuesday that because Jackson was so quiet and decent with them, they always had trouble listening to talk about the later, much-weirder version of the pop star.

whelan2-19-08-2Twenty-two years earlier, though, Whelan’s memories of the entire process were a bit more raw. According to the blog A Distant Soil, in the summer 1987 edition of American Fantasy magazine, right,

Whelan said: “The unfortunate thing was that so many people around them had their own ideas about what the painting should look like that my ideas of what it should be got lost in the shuffle. You can add to the fact that fifty percent of the painting was executed on a stove in an apartment in Hollywood in very hot weather, under adverse circumstances…by the time I figured attorney’s fees, how much time I spent on it and the aggravations, I probably made as much on an hourly basis as I would’ve received for a regular commission.”

Whelan reserves most of his disattisfaction for the record company who “…were constantly trying to get me to get my price down, telling me they had illustrators lining up on the street outside to do this job for free and I’m ripping them off and do I realize all the jobs I’m going to get as a result of doing this Jackson over? Well, I have to laugh because I didn’t get one job as a result of that cover.”

Well, as they say, he who laughs last laughs best. Original Victory album artwork, acrylic, 20 ½ x 38 in., with artist letter of authenticity, $40,000 - $60,000.

tampa, fl - city council voting to amend human rights ord. to include gender discrimination
"Tampa council grants protections to transgender people"
By Janet Zink, Times Staff Writer
    Posted: Nov 05, 2009 02:04 PM

TAMPA — The City Council on Thursday gave unanimous preliminary approval to expanding its human rights ordinance to protect transgender people from discrimination.

But does that mean cross-dressers are protected, too?

Specifically, the ordinance prohibits discrimination on the basis of "gender identity and expression."

"Is it today that I'm sitting next to Albert and tomorrow I'm sitting next to Alice?" asked council member Charlie Miranda.

a few thoughts of my own:

    - the title is misleading, because this was just a preliminary vote.
    - so much of the article makes me want to *headdesk*
    - the whole "crossdresser vs. transgender" false dichotomy is completely ridiculous on so many levels.
~so much of the banter from some of the council folks seems to be centered around this completely privileged position which just might set up trans* folks up for further scrutiny of their bodies in the name of "non-discrimination."
~who gets to decide whether one is "truly" trans* or just trying to cause a disruption or whatever? [just for clarity's sake, I am referencing charlie miranda's words here.]
~what would happen to people who are transgender and personally ID with a M or F label but are not considered to be "passing" by employees?
    ~etc...
    - so many of the comments make me want to *headdesk* as well

a few [more positive] thoughts of my own:

    - YAY! my favorite city council persons were among the ones who countered the derailing points about "cross-dressers" and what not.
    - john dingfelder, one of those council folks, is running for county commissioner in 2010. last night, he told me that if gets voted in, he will be a solid ally in helping overturn the current county-wide ban on gay book displays in libraries. double YAY!
    - despite the ignorance of some of those folks ... there was only only ONE dissenting vote! that's pretty damn exciting, eh?

...what's new with local news where you all live?

Want to know the sign for 'nerd' in ASL?
[info]transversely and I don't have ASL class next week because of Veterans' Day. We also have no class the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Being nerds, we are horribly disappointed by this. Fortunately, we've found a sign club at the local college where we can go to practice.

Because class starts at 6:15, we don't have time to go home after work, so we grab a burrito downtown each week. We use it as a time to practice our ASL and get our heads into 'ASL mode' before class. Yesterday we literally spent all of the walk to dinner, then dinner itself, then the walk back up to the car without speaking aloud, and had a great conversation in ASL! It is really cool to realize how much we've progressed. Sometimes when I'm learning new languages I get frustrated by how little I can say; it's nice to remember how much I can say.

Our big final project for the semester is to watch two stories on our course DVD "textbook," pick one, practice it, and then videotape ourselves telling the story and turn it in. I am very excited about this! I've been watching ASL poems and interpretations of songs online to get psyched up for it and get ideas on good and bad storytelling.

Stay tuned for my video in a few weeks. ;)

Oh, and the sign for nerd is: put your index and middle fingers together and run the tips of them from the point of your nose up to the bridge, like you're pushing your glasses up. :)

A disabled group under attack from organized crime
Calabria is the Italian region most affected by organized crime. (There it is called, not Mafia, but 'Ndrangheta.) This has repercussions in all sorts of areas you would not imagine, such as the struggle for the rights of disabled persons. There has been an attempt on the lives of two disabled leaders, one of whom, Nunzia Coppede', noticed on time that the brake cables in her car had been severed. If she or the other (unnamed) person had taken their car, they would probably have suffered a grave accident as soon as they needed to brake. The reason seems to be that their voluntary group has been given the use of a building confiscated from local villains. Anyone who wanted to show support to these good and threatened people can write to one of these two e-mail addresses: fishcalabria@gmail.com, or info@superando.it.

P.S.: please do what you can to spread this. Everyone is welcome to copy and publish it on blogs, bulletins, etc.

On Being Ashamed of Feminism and its Hypocrisy
Feeling so very disappointed right now.

Until feminism as a movement stops being mainly an exercise in navel-gazing for middle-class, educated, white cissexual women, until those professing to be feminists stop holding up bigots like Raymond, Greer and Bindel as icons because they're getting damp over some paragraph they once wrote, until the movement at large takes itself seriously enough to apply its supposed principles to cover all women, and all cases where the powerful oppress the powerless, regardless of sex, gender, race, education, class, income, etc., until someone can make a post about trans people having sex on a supposed feminist discussion board without commenters claiming that a trans person (and you know they mean trans woman) having sex without disclosing their medical history is non-consensual sex (i.e. rape) which should be prosecuted, and having half the people in the discussion sharing a similar sentiment...

...until then, I'm going to proclaim loudly and clearly, "I'm not with them."

By the way, did you know that teh tranz is just like an STD? You can probably even catch it from a snog!

(Also, I think that interpreting "the emotional strain caused by the non disclosure is actionable, and so should it be when one hides the fact of them being trans" as "it's OK to kill trans women after fucking them" is probably not that much of a stretch, as you know, that does actually happen quite a lot).
